About the Serological Research Institute

In 1978 the Serological Research Institute (SERI) was incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in the State of California. Since its incorporation, SERI has provided quality, state-of-the-art forensic services, including laboratory analysis, professional consultation, and courtroom testimony. In 1980, SERI began selling laboratory supplies and reagents. Since then, our laboratory products have become staples used in forensic labs around the world.

About the Forensic Laboratory

Our analytical laboratory specializes in the identification and testing of biological evidence in criminal and civil cases. Services include location and identification of evidentiary stains, traditional forensic serology methods, and advanced forensic DNA typing procedures. Our scientists routinely review case documentation for our clients and will perform re-analysis of evidence as requested. Our clients include law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, defense attorneys, corporations and private individuals.

SERI has worked over 10,000 cases and processed over 65,000 forensic DNA samples. Our analysts have testified in multiple states and jurisdictions across the U.S. The extensive forensic biology experience and expertise of our criminalists lead the field in the handling of challenging forensic evidence samples. Our well-trained scientists are often scouted by other laboratories, and many forensic laboratories across the country are staffed with SERI alumni.

Partial Client List

SERI continues to participate in special research projects, both large and small, and invites inquiries for these services. We can provide the laboratory services needed for outsourcing of backlogged casework. We welcome contacts regarding these services.

Sacramento Public Defender's Office

"I enjoyed working with SERI. SERI made the process quite simple for me. Of particular note, the results were easily understood, and I was able to discuss them with my client without having to ‘dumb down’ the report or the conclusions. I (and our office) will continue to employ SERI for our DNA analyses and for double-checking and reviewing results we receive from the prosecution."

Law Offices of Richard M. Marsh, Jr.

“Our Houston law firm had a very difficult time finding a knowledgeable source to help us interpret a DNA report from the local police crime lab. We found SERI, after an exhaustive search, and were very impressed by their staff's knowledge which helped us to understand the DNA information better and formulate a proper defense for our client.“

“The quality of the data is superb! Thank you for the great work. Once again, thanks for the 5+ star service provided to our precious samples! SERI is the only name in town when it comes to forensics.”

Oracle Investigations Group, Inc.

“Oracle Investigations Group retained SERI in June of 2010 to assist in a school investigation. … SERI generated a detailed report of findings, and our client was extremely satisfied. [T]he reports stood alone and showed both employees the overwhelming amount of evidence against them. Kudos to your firm for a job well done.”

Hozubin & Moberly

“In a Sex Assault 1 case, where the client was facing 35+ years if convicted, SERI tested critical DNA evidence (e.g., used condom, forensically collected items, etc.)  By explaining the methodology, reasoning and conclusions of SERI's work, the expert was able to convey critical information - in direct conflict with the witnesses'  testimony (and the client's incriminating statements) to the jury resulting in his acquittal.”

About our Sales Department

Our Sales Department's comprehensive product inventory focuses primarily on materials used in the identification and typing of biological evidence. SERI is the sole source provider in the United States for the highly popular SERATEC PSA SemiQuant Membrane Test and the SERATEC HemDirect Cassette Membrane Assay for Human Hemoglobin Test. We are pleased to announce that we've added the SERATEC PMB Test and the SERATEC Saliva Test to our list of products.

Gary Harmor is a graduate of CSU Sacramento with a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Forensic Science and minors in Chemistry and Biological Science. In 1978, Mr. Harmor started SERI with the late Brian Wraxall, where they spent the entire first year training many of the present-day criminalists, including a few laboratory directors, all over the country in serological methods. They then spent the next 34 years working casework in forensic biology and forensic DNA analysis. Mr. Harmor recently became SERI’s Executive Director and is a Fellow of the American Board of Criminalistics in Forensic Biology with subspecialties in Forensic Biochemistry and Forensic Molecular Biology. He is also a member of the California Association of Criminalists, the Northwest Association of Forensic Scientists, the California Association of Crime Laboratory Directors (CACLD), and the Association of Forensic Quality Assurance Managers (AFQAM). Mr. Harmor has also been qualified as an expert in both forensic serology and forensic DNA and has testified in hundreds of cases in 22 states, including over 20 counties in California alone, as well as in federal and military courts. He is experienced in biological screening methods and HLADQα, STR and YSTR DNA analysis.
